José Mourinho, the Fenerbahce coach, responded to Pep Guardiola after the Manchester City manager said he has won twice as many Premier League titles as the Portuguese.
Guardiola raised six fingers at Liverpool fans last weekend after the 2-0 draw at Anfield, indicating the number of titles he has won.
Asked if he could suffer the same fate as former Chelsea manager Mourinho, who called for “respect” after winning three English top-flight titles, Guardiola made reference to his superior record.
Guardiola told reporters: “I hope not in my case. He won three, I won six but we are equal. We are together in those situations.
Mourinho has now claimed he won “fair and square”, a reference to City facing 115 charges for alleged breaches of financial fair play.
He said: “Guardiola told me something yesterday. He won six trophies and I won three, but I won fair and square. If I lose, I want to congratulate my opponent because he was better than me. “I don’t want to win by dealing with 150 lawsuits.”
