The elected president of Uruguay, Yamandú Orsispoke about 10 p.m. this Sunday before the militancy of the Wide Front. In his speech, the next president assured that will bet on “national dialogue.”
“Despite the rain, it is clearing the horizon. And that is important,” he began by saying and thanked the militancy, who ran an “exemplary” campaign.
Orsi, who obtained about 49% of the votes, recalled that 40 years of uninterrupted democracy have passed in Uruguay. “The country of freedom, equality and also fraternity triumphs once again”said.
The president-elect highlighted that there is a part of the people that is “with other feelings.” “These people will also have to help us build an increasingly better country. We need them too. The message that cannot be other than to continue embracing flags and ideas,” Orsi encouraged.
“Long live our democratic system. I will be the president who calls again and again for national dialogue to find the best solutions, with our proposals but also listening to what others say,” he added.
“I am going to be the president who builds a more integrated country. No one can be left behind, from a social, economic and political point of view. This will also have to be a country that moves towards development, prosperity, national growth, a country that advances. And I invite everyone to do that (…) We strongly believe in the idea that Uruguay is one,” he said.
Orsi committed to working “very hard” every day and “not slacking off” for the “construction” of a country that Uruguayans deserve, he noted.
The president-elect also recognized the leaders of the Frente Amplio, such as Tabaré Vázquez and José Mujica. “I learned a lot and I will continue to learn.”
The first to speak on the Frente Amplio stage was the vice president-elect, Carolina Cossewho remembered former president Tabaré Vázquez, who died in 2020. The leader greeted the Uruguayans who did not vote for the Frente Amplio.
“Joy will return to be entangled with your voice”said Cosse, quoting the song A redoblar. “We come to unite. They have wanted to divide us. They have told us that our Frente Amplio is the worst in history. And we are proud of this Frente Amplio. We will not hold grudges,” said Cosse, who competed against Orsi in the primary elections.
The new vice president said that in the next government a “progressive course” will be built; He pointed out that the Frente Amplio government program will be complied with and announced that those who did not vote for the leftist coalition will be heard. “We are going to respect all opinions and we are going to make everyone’s opinions respected. It cannot be that any Uruguayan is afraid,” he assured.
The pollsters estimated that the difference between Orsi and Delgado was going to be very close and it was expected that at 8:30 p.m. it would not be known who would be the next president. However, the four pollsters agreed that the opposition candidate defeated the official candidate by more than three percentage points.
With 98.95% of the voting circuits scrutinized, the Orsi-Cosse formula, of the Frente Amplio, obtained 1,183,196 votes compared to 1,090,194 from his rival, the ruling party Álvaro Delgado, according to the Electoral Court.
In the elections of October 27, Orsi had 17.2 percentage points more than Delgado, but in the runoff he had the support of all the parties in the official coalition, which together obtained the 47,7%.
