The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyenindicated this Friday that the agreement between the European Union and Mercosur “It is a truly historic milestone.”.
“Today is a truly historic milestone and allow me to thank the negotiators who worked tirelessly and have been successful,” the European official began; while analyzing: “The link between Europe and Mercosur is one of the strongest in the world. It is a bond that is anchored in trust.”
“30 years ago, my predecessor was here in Montevideo and met with his father, dear Luis, who was president of Uruguay, and together they shared a vision of deep integration,” he recalled. von der Leyen.
“Today in Montevideo we are turning that vision into a reality. We are strengthening this unique alliance. We are sending a message to the world: we show that democracies can support each other. We also send a message to our people and our businesses. “This agreement was designed with their interests within it,” he continued.
He then stressed that “The European Union and Mercosur created one of the largest trade alliances the world has ever seen. We are forming a market of more than 700 million consumers. This alliance will strengthen value chains and create jobs for both sides of the Atlantic”, he highlighted.
At another point in his speech, he highlighted that “Trade agreements are more than economic agreements” and said that “this ensures that investments respect the natural heritage that Mercosur has. Both sides win”, he emphasized.
And he continued: “We are focused on justice and mutual respect. This is a win for Europe too: 60,000 companies are currently exporting to Mercosur. To our producers, I say that we have heard you. This agreement includes robust safeguards to protect you. “This agreement opens jobs for both parties.”
Finally, he indicated: “This is a good day for Mercosur, for Europe and a historic moment. An entire generation dedicated their efforts to bringing this agreement and making it a reality. Let’s ensure this agreement delivers as promised and helps future generations”.
Before, the president of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Forsaid that the agreement with the European Union “It is not just a commercial exchange“, while highlighting: “It is very important that the world opens up to us”.
“An agreement of this type is an opportunity. It is very important that the steps are small but safe and true in the same direction,” he highlighted.
Then he indicated: “Let’s go to the essence that led us to get here. It is clear that in Mercosur we do not all have the same ideology. We all know how easy it is in life to destroy and how difficult it is to build.”.
“For me, this vindicates the vocation of service, it vindicates the best policy,” he concluded.
