The opposition investigates the reserved expenses of former Chilean minister Manuel Monsalve

The Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, pointed out that only Manuel Monsalve can explain how he spent that money.

A new edge opened in the Monsalve Casewhich keeps the former Chilean Undersecretary of the Interior in preventive detention accused of rape and sexual abuse by a subordinate, a fact that caused the biggest political crisis of the Government of Gabriel Boric: a report from that same portfolio revealed that the defenestrated former authority asked the State in the last three years $847 million pesos (more than USD 870 thousand) for your “reserved expenses”.

The details of the amounts were delivered last Thursday after a request from the Investigative Commission of the case in the Chamber of Deputies, and read by the deputy Carla Morales (RN) in the session of said commission this Monday, in which he was also Eduardo Cerna, director of the Investigative Police.

However, several doubts remained, especially because Interior He provided the amounts but not the details on which Monsalve had spent them. Due to this, the National Renovation parliamentarian requested “a second report to clarify the planning of the reserved expenses, to also have an order of how those resources were spent, and therefore also that we be responded to in the time and manner expended,” as stated BBCL Investigates.

According to the document, As soon as Monsalve took office -in March 2022-, he asked for $38.1 million (USD 39 thousand) and he did the same in the months of April and May. In September it requested 73.6 million (USD 75 thousand); In October he asked again for $38.1 million and in December of that year he submitted a request for $137.7 million (USD 141 thousand).

Only in mid-2023 did he ask for more money again: $150 million in June (USD 153 thousand); $80.1 million in November (USD 82 thousand) and another $150 million in December.

This year it had only made two requests, for $50 million each (USD 51 thousand).in July and September, the last one a month before the complaint against him was uncovered and which led him to resign from La Moneda on Last October 17th.

But, of those last $50 million, only $1 million (a little more than USD 1,000) remained when the new undersecretary, Luis Cordero, replaced him in his position and opened the safe. The question falls out of place: What did Monsalve spend $49 million on in just one month?

The answer to this question has not yet arrived, and the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Toháhe already said that the money They can only be rendered by Monsalvewho is serving preventive detention in the prison annex Captain Yaber, prison for criminals “collar and tie”, in which you have to pay a high monthly payment.

It also remains to be clarified where Monsalve got the $24.9 million (USD 25,500) that he deposited in his Voluntary Pension Savings (APV) account, in December 2023, the same month in which it requested $150 million for its expenses, as reported by the aforementioned media.

As things stand, parliamentarians and authorities are also waiting for another report on the matter, this time from Comptrollerwhile the State Defense Council (CDE) studies the actions to follow after being officiated by the new undersecretary, Luis Cordero, at the end of October.

This, since the Public Ministry has not yet managed to lift banking secrecy de Monsalve, despite the efforts of the prosecutor in charge of this new aspect, Francisco Jacirfrom the North Central Metropolitan Prosecutor’s Office.
