There have been disasters that have devastated the community and caused loss of life and property in different parts of Nigeria.
Some of these calamities are decreed by God while others are caused by our actions.
We have analyzed some of the most interesting ones in the country in 2024.
Kidnapping Kuriga’s students

On the 7th of March this year, some armed gunmen attacked Kuriga town on Thursday morning, destroying the town’s primary and secondary schools.
The attackers abducted a large number of students during their attack on the town in Chikun Local Government Area.
The incident left many families in the town – who said they saw the young children being driven into the forest – in a state of worry and distress.
At that time, the people of the town told the BBC that the incident affected almost all the houses in the town.
Prior to this attack, some assailants entered the village of Kuriga in January, where they killed the school principal and kidnapped his wife.
The students spent more than two weeks in the hands of the kidnappers.

The pictures of the students that were published after their rescue, showed them in defeat, their bodies were dusty, their clothes were dirty, it seems that they have not seen water since they were abducted.
A building collapse killed 22 students in Plateau

On Friday, July 12, there was a tragic collapse of a school building in Plateau state at the same time that the students of the school were in the middle of writing exams.
Information released by the authorities at the time said there were about 154 students in the school called Saints Academy in Jos.
The parents of the children have been trying to save their children by using their hands and swords to get rid of the robbers who have oppressed them.
The school is near a stream that has gone down due to soil erosion.
Residents of the area said that miners have been doing their business in the area for a long time before the establishment of the school.
Police said 132 students were rescued and rushed to state hospitals for medical attention.
Burning people in a mosque in Kano
The people inside the mosque got a lot of burns on their bodies, which caused more than 20 people to die, after many of them were injured.
The police have already arrested the man suspected of setting the fire, who is 38 years old and is still being tried in court.
The police said that the accused confirmed to them that he took the action as part of the push for the division of the inheritance, where he said that he set the fire because there were some people who he thought had suppressed his rights in the mosque.
‘More than a million people lost their homes in Maiduguri floods’

In 2024, many states of Nigeria were faced with severe floods, which resulted in the loss of life and property.
However, the flood that affected the city of Maiduguri at the beginning of September, affected everyone because of its severity.
The incident occurred as a result of the explosion of the Alau Dam in the city of Maiduguri.
In an interview with the BBC, the governor of the state, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, said that the flood affected at least two million people.
When the incident happened, authorities in the state announced the closure of all schools in the state for two weeks.
Many roads were filled with water, which caused difficulties for traffic.
The video posted on Facebook and X shows how the flood engulfed the streets of Maiduguri as people climbed the bridges to seek refuge.
The flood affected the zoo, causing the animals to run wild on the streets.
Also on the site of the city’s prison, the incident caused dozens of prisoners to be detained.
The state government has opened at least four refugee camps to take care of the people.
The death of more than 180 people in the tanker accident

It was in October that there was another tragedy of an oil tanker accident in Majia town in Jigawa state in the northwest of Nigeria.
“The oil tanker was traveling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe state when it hijacked the driver,” said the police spokesman, DSP Lawan Adam Shiisu.
Aishatu Sa’ad, the head of the Road Safety Authority in Jigawa, told the BBC that the accident happened after the tanker driver avoided a truck carrying tomatoes.
This caused the tanker driver to fall to the side of the road until the car’s head separated from its trunk, which caused the fuel it was carrying to spill on the road and on the side of the road.
DSP Shiisu, said that after the tanker fell, people rushed to the place to scoop up the fuel that had spilled on the ground after they were defeated by the security forces who were chasing them in an attempt to avoid the fire.
Witnesses told the BBC that the tanker was on fire for about two hours before firefighters managed to put it out.
Boat accidents in Kogi and Niger

At the end of the month of November this year, there was a serious boating accident that resulted in the loss of lives in Kogi state in the middle of Nigeria.
Authorities in Nigeria said the boat was carrying more than 200 passengers.
In a statement issued by the office of the governor of Kogi state, he confirmed the rescue of at least 24 people, who were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The boat – which was on its way to the weekly Katcha market in Niger State – carrying passengers who were mostly traders and farmers sank in the Dambo-Ebuchi area of the Niger River.
In a statement issued by the director general of the state emergency aid agency, Abdullahi Baba Arah, he said that the boat that came from Mundi was going to Gbajibo to attend the Maulidi celebration and was full of women and children.
The incident happened when the boat carrying more than 300 passengers capsized, where about 100 of them died.
