The president of Paraguay, Santiago Penaheld a telephone conversation with the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump. The dialogue took place within the framework of the G20 summit taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in which the Paraguayan is participating, while Trump received the call from his residence in Mar-a-Lago, in Florida (United States ).
During the dialogue, which lasted several minutes, Peña congratulated Trump on his recent victory in the US presidential elections. Likewise, he invited him to visit Paraguay, which would mark a historic event, since it would be the first time that a United States leader made an official visit to the South American country.
After the meeting, Peña published a message on his X account: “Thank you very much @realDonaldTrump for the phone conversation today. Paraguay and the United States maintain a fraternal friendship and a historical relationship of collaborationand I am sure that under your Presidency and with your vision those ties will become even closer, under the ideals of freedom and the prosperity”.
The leaders committed to strengthen bilateral relations, assuming that both have the same global agenda.
Both leaders also discussed the possibility of a meeting on US soil and They agreed to coordinate a date for Peña to visit Trump in the United States.
Peña was one of the first Latin American leaders to congratulate Trump on his re-election in the United States and declared himself convinced that they will continue to strengthen cooperation for the benefit of their countries.
“Congratulations @realDonalTrump for being elected as the new President of the United States,” Peña posted on his account on the social network X.
“Democracy has once again demonstrated its strength! Paraguay and the United States share deep democratic values, and I am sure that we will continue to strengthen our cooperation for the benefit of our nations,” added the head of state.
Days later, Peña sent a letter to Trump, reiterating his congratulations: “I have the honor of addressing Your Excellency, on the occasion of presenting to you on behalf of the Government and People of the Republic of Paraguay, as well as my own, our “Sincere congratulations on your election, for a second term, as President of the United States of America.”
“Supported by these considerations, I advance the interest of my government to continue consolidating bilateral relations between the Republic of Paraguay and the United States of America. I firmly believe that, through collaboration and working together, we can address common challenges and take advantage of the opportunities that arise in a constantly changing world,” added the Paraguayan president.
Finally, Peña highlighted: “At the time of expressing my best wishes for your fortunate person, and the best success in the fulfillment of your important functions, I take this opportunity to express to Your Excellency the assurances of my highest and distinguished consideration.”.
Paraguay has been an ally of Washington on issues on the international agenda, such as support for Ukraine and Israel.
Likewise, it is the only South American country that maintains diplomatic relations with Taiwan, which date back to 1957.
