Russia has begun mass production of mobile bomb shelters designed to protect against threats such as radiation, shock waves and natural disasters, the Research Institute of the Ministry of Emergencies.
The shelters, called “KUB-M”, look like reinforced cargo containers and can be installed in the permafrost of northern Russia. According to the institute, a standard unit can accommodate 54 people, with the option of adding additional modules.
The announcement comes at a time of high global tension, while the war in Ukraine is moving toward a phase that officials consider the most dangerous since the beginning of the conflict.
Although the institute did not link the shelters’ production to the current situation, the announcement coincided with the decision of USA to authorize Ukraine the use of long-range missiles to attack inside Russian territory, a move that has been rejected by the Kremlin.
The Russian president, Vladimir Putinsigned a decree this Tuesday that allows the use of nuclear weapons against non-nuclear states if they have the support of atomic powers.
