Small gas thrusters allow the warhead bus to maneuver above the atmosphere for precise targeting, Lewis said, noting that the “spider-shaped” piece of debris appeared to include them.
The other large section of debris contained guides, fuel tanks and other electronic components, he said. The bus supports MIRVs, each of which carries a warhead and can hit a different target.
None of the technologies used in the Russian intermediate-range ballistic missiles that hit Ukraine are novel, but examining them up close and first-hand could provide interesting insights into the latest Russian missile designs, he said.
Russia’s Defense Ministry did not respond to a Reuters request for comment for this story.

At a press conference after the missile launch, Putin said it was a direct response to attacks on Russia by Ukrainian forces with US and British missiles. He warned that the war could be escalating into a global conflict and that Russia could attack military facilities of Western countries that support Ukraine.
Lewis noted that the high reentry velocity was enough to cause damage even if the warhead was made of non-explosive material, such as metal.
