‘Barista’, ‘spoiler’ and ‘rap’ are some of the words that entered the dictionary this Tuesday. Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), as announced by the institution.
This update of the tool consulted by millions of Spanish speakers includes 4,074 new features, including new words and updates to meanings, said the RAE in a statement.
One of the words that entered on this occasion was ‘dana’, which designates the isolated depression at high levels, a phenomenon that leaves torrential floods such as those that at the end of October caused 230 deaths in Spain, almost all of them in the region of Valencia.
The RAE adds words from the world of cinema and television, such as ‘spoiler’ and ‘season’, in the sense of a set of episodes of a series, and from sports, such as ‘bicycle cross’, ‘fitness’ and ‘capoeira’.
It also adds quite a few words from gastronomy, such as ‘barista’, ‘frapé’, ‘umami’ and ‘wasabi’, and from music, such as ‘bluesman’, ‘rap’ and ‘funk’.
As the updates are worked on with Latin American language academies, common words in those countries are included, such as ‘azotehuela’, interior patio of a home in Mexico; ‘posnet’, as the device that allows card payments is known in several countries; and ‘parrillar’, as in Chile they say to roast some food on a grill.
Other terms that are added are ‘teleworking’, ‘macro survey’, ‘humanizing’ and ‘chorreo’, as a reprimand is colloquially called in Spain.
