During the New Year celebrations at his residence in Mar-a-LagoFlorida, Trump addressed several key issues, including international challenges, immigration and his attendance at the former president’s state funeral Jimmy Carterdied at 100 years old.
In statements to reporters, Trump acknowledged the challenges his administration will face: “We are going to face the Israel crisis, the problems between Russia and Ukraine and inflation, which is a disaster for our country,” said the Republican.
Likewise, he reiterated his well-known stance against irregular immigration, describing the arrival of immigrants across the southern border of the United States as “massive.” According to Trump, many of them come from “prisons and mental institutions” in South America, and he assured that “we have to act.”
The Republican leader also demanded the release of Israeli citizens who remain captive in Gaza. “If they are not released before I take office for my second term, there will be severe consequences,” he warned, suggesting a firm stance toward the conflict in the Middle East.
On the other hand, Trump confirmed his attendance at the state funeral of Jimmy Carterwho died last Sunday at the age of 100. “I will do that. I’ll be there. “We are invited,” said the president-elect when asked about it. However, he declined to reveal whether he had spoken to any member of the former president’s family, saying he would “prefer not to say.”
The funeral for Carter, who presided from 1977 to 1981, will begin Saturday in his home state of Georgia and will culminate on January 9 in the Washington National Cathedral.
Trump is expected to attend along with other political figures. Carter, a Democrat who voted by mail in the 2024 presidential election, had expressed his support for the vice president Kamala Harrisaccording to statements from his relatives. Trump’s presence at the funeral will mark one of his first official acts before taking office.
