Clyde Bellecourt Cause of Death – Passed Away : MINNEAPOLIS — Civil rights organizer, Clyde Bellecourt, who was best known for Co-founding the American Indian Movement has died. Clyde Bellecourt passed away of cancer on Tuesday, January 11th, 2022 at his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S. He was just 85. Clyde Bellecourt was born on May 8, 1936, in White Earth Indian Reservation. Bellecourt co-founded the AIM in 1968, which began as a local organization in Minneapolis that sought to grapple with issues of police brutality and discrimination against Native Americans.

The news was broken on Tuesday, January 11th, 2022 by Whitney Rencountre. She said: “One of the great leaders amongst our people made his journey to the spirit world. Sending our condolences to the family of Clyde Bellecourt, Co-Founder of the American Indian Movement. Thank you for standing up for our people and your tireless efforts to elevate the presence of our people, to the rest of the world.”

Bellecourt continues to lead AIM efforts on a national and international level. He was the coordinator of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and the Media, which has long protested sports teams’ use of Native American mascots and names, urging them to stop. After years of protests, the Washington Redskins finally dropped their mascot in 2020. He also led Heart of the Earth, Inc., an interpretive center behind AIM’s former survival school,’ which operated in Minneapolis from 1972 to 2008.

In 1972, he established the Heart of the Earth Survival School, which received 501(c)(3) recognition in 1974. With the passing of the American Indian Education Act, Native American tribes and affiliated organizations were permitted to contract to run BIA-funded Native American schools. For the past 24 years, Heart of the Earth has been awarded similar contracts. The school served students in grades PreK through 12. Adult education and prison programs were added in the 1980s. A national law education program has been coordinated by Heart of the Earth.
