Former Super Eagles defender Mobi Oparaku is confident that the Confederation of African Football, CAF, will not sanction Nigeria for the canceled 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers match against Libya.
The second leg of Group D was suspended by CAF after the Águilas’ terrible experience.
Libyan authorities diverted the flight from Nigeria to a remote airport, where they were denied food, water and internet for more than 18 hours.
Following the incident, the Super Eagles players decided not to continue with the match.
CAF eventually removed the party from the list and referred the matter to its disciplinary body.
Although the verdict of the disciplinary body is still awaited, Oparaku is confident that Nigeria will not be sanctioned because the country has always been a good host for visiting teams.
“CAF knows that we are not what Libyans say, we are not biased, we never mistreat our visitors, CAF knows that we cannot do that,” he told Brila FM.
“I am confident that Nigeria will not receive any sanctions and I believe that we will get a fair result.”
Despite not playing their match on matchday four, Nigeria leads the group with seven points, while Libya is last with just one point.
