Apply for NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF) Scholarship 2023

The NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF) has two scholarship opportunities for African-American undergraduates and legal scholars: the Herbert Lehman Education Fund and the Earl Warren Scholarship.

The Herbert Lehman Education Fund assists excellent undergraduate students who require financial assistance to continue their education. Applicants must demonstrate financial necessity as well as a dedication to public service.

The Earl Warren Scholarship is given to rising law students whose dedication to social justice demonstrates exceptional potential for training as civil rights and public interest lawyers.

Over the next two decades, the scholarship will cover the education and training of 50 aspiring civil rights attorneys, including paying law school, summer internships, and a two-year postgraduate fellowship at a racial justice legal firm in the South.

Earl Warren students are granted priority consideration for an LDF internship, externship, or guided research project, while also receiving financial help. The opportunity is offered on the LDF website. Please keep in mind that scholarships and internships are not assured.

About the Scholarship Providers NAACP

A group of activists from different races came together to create the NAACP in New York City in February 1909, partly in response to the Illinois race riot in Springfield in 1908.

It was started by white and black activists in New York City, in part as a reaction to the persistent violence against African Americans nationwide.

The NAACP's anti-lynching campaign was at the forefront of its agenda throughout its formative years. Due to its significant court victories during the 1950s and 1960s civil rights movement, the NAACP now has more than 2,200 chapters and over 500,000 members worldwide.

In the 1950s and 1960s, the NAACP was crucial to the civil rights movement. The 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, which prohibited segregation in public schools, was one of the group's major successes.

A 2020 poll by the American Bar Association found that more than half of law students had debts totaling $150,000. This led to the establishment of the award.

The LDF stated that those chosen for the school, which specializes in creating champions for southern Black communities, will pledge to practice civil rights law for at least eight years after graduating. Additionally, candidates may start law school as early as this year.

This program's funding is an effort to specifically address the racial and economic hurdles that frequently discourage students from pursuing their aspirations of becoming civil rights attorneys.
