A municipality of Filipinas located on the slope of Kanlaon volcanowhich experienced a rash at the beginning of the month and forced tens of thousands of people to evacuateprohibited this Tuesday from organizing parties for Christmas due to the fear that the situation will worsen.
“He It is forbidden to celebrate Christmas because we might not know if there is an eruption.“And if there are parties, we will not know if the worst scenario could come at that time,” the mayor of the city of Kanlaon, José Chubasco Cardenas, adjacent to the volcano, said in statements to the Teleradyo Servisyo station reported by ABS-CBN.
Around 60,000 people reside in the city.
Other municipalities affected by the Kanlaon eruption, such as La Castellana o Newthey did organize various events aimed at evacuees, local media reported.
Kanlaon erupted on December 9, vomiting a “voluminous cloud” of ash that quickly rose to 3,000 meters above the chimneyspreading waste in numerous neighboring cities and expelling pyroclastic flows, dangerous gas mixtures and volcanic material that moves at ground level.
He Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the alert on the volcano to number 3, out of a total of 5, which implies that the magma is near or on the surface, and the activity could cause a dangerous rash in weeks.
The authorities then decreed to forcibly evict all residents in a six kilometer radius of the volcano and Kanlaon municipality has 7,548 displacedaccording to data from last Saturday.
As of last Friday there were still some 20,000 in shelters and other locations, as stated by the Philippine Civil Defense in a statement, although the Philippine authorities initially estimated at about 84,000 the number of evacuations necessary.
Phivolcs has indicated that new eruptions could occur in the coming weeks and the Kanlaon expelled clouds of ash both today and yesterday that raised the alert. The Philippine institute noted that this morning there was a reissue“generating a dark plume (of ashes) 1.2 kilometers high.”
The volcano, located on the central island of Negroshas registered 15 eruptions in the last decade. In 1996, three climbers lost their lives as a result of the ejection of ash from the volcano. The Kanlaon is one of the 24 active volcanoes from the Philippines.
The Philippines settles on the call Pacific Ring of Fire. It is a geographical region that surrounds the Pacific Ocean, known for its intense seismic and volcanic activity. This area is shaped like a horseshoe and covers approximately 40,000 kilometers. It includes the coasts of North America, South America, East Asia and Oceania.
