A man stabbed several people in a violent attack in New York; There are two dead and one seriously injured

A man carried out a series of stabbings in a strip of Manhattan Monday morning, killing two people and leaving a third seriously injured, without saying a word to his victims, authorities said.

He suspicious51, was in police custody after being found with blood on his clothing and the two kitchen knives he was carrying, authorities said. The names of the suspect and victims were not immediately released.

The suspect, apparently a homeless person, had been sentenced in a criminal case a few months ago, the Democratic mayor said, without elaborating.

The first stabbing, on West 19th Street, killed a 26-year-old construction worker who was standing next to his workplace near the Hudson River shortly before 8:30 a.m.

Two hours later and on the other side of the island of Manhattana 68-year-old man was attacked while fishing in the East River near East 30th Street. Both men died, Kenny said.

The suspect then apparently traveled north near the riverbank. Around 10:55 a.m., a 36-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times near United Nations headquarters on East 42nd Street, Kenny said. She is hospitalized in critical condition.

A passing taxi driver saw the third attack and alerted police at nearby First Avenue and East 46th Street, authorities said. An officer soon arrested the suspect.
