A Chilean scientist was recognized as the second most influential in the world

The prestigious Stanford University A few days ago he recognized the Chilean biologist Rodrigo Gutierrezalternate director of Millennium Institute in Integrative Biology (IBio), Doctor in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Michigan State University and full professor at the Faculty of Biological Sciences of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (PUC), as the second most influential scientist in the world, in its annual ranking.

This list highlights those researchers whose work has had a high impact at an international level, and in it Gutiérrez appears as the second most cited by his peers.

As reported from IBio Through a statement, the Chilean scientist has specialized in systems biologywhich seeks to unravel the mystery of how plants react to extreme environmental signals, especially in the face of a lack nitrogen nutrientsa fundamental element for its existence.

The work of Gutiérrez has allowed, for example, to learn about the way in which different wild plants manage to survive in the famous Chilean desert of Atacamathe driest in the world.

“This understanding is especially relevant in the context of climate change, since makes it possible to develop strategies to optimize crop performance in the face of changing and increasingly extreme environmental conditionswhich impacts agriculture, biotechnology and the conservation of natural resources,” said the academic, according to Science Cooperative.

Finally, he called a collaborative work to promote “infrastructures that facilitate scientific work in Chilein universities, just as better mechanisms must be implemented to promote collaboration with peers from neighboring countries and other places in the world.”

His inclusion in this ranking is fair credit to his hard work, which has already been awarded on several occasions. Just last July, Gutiérrez became part of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), a renowned organization of 2,000 select researchers that promotes the exchange of scientific information and helps build an ideal environment in which scientists can carry out their research.

He was also listed as the country’s most outstanding young scientist by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and recognized as Michigan State University Impact AlumnusUSA.
