At least 56 football fans have died in Guinea after a stampede.
It all started after fans clashed at a soccer match and caused a stampede in the town of Nzerekore, Guinea.
A government statement said Monday that the incident occurred during the final of a local tournament on Sunday afternoon in Nzerekore.
The statement said that rival fans invaded the field in protest of the referee’s decision.
It was learned that the stampede occurred after the police tried to calm the commotion with tear gas.
According to the statement, the government promised to care for the injured with all necessary measures, stressing that an investigation has been opened to determine those responsible for the incident.
The country’s Prime Minister, Amadou Oury Bah, in a message on his X account, called for calm so that hospital services are not hindered in providing first aid to the injured.
“Regional authorities are working to restore calm and serenity among the population. The Government is closely monitoring the evolution of the situation and reiterates its call for calm so that hospital services are not hindered when providing first aid to the injured.
“The moral authorities of the city are requested to also contribute to the restoration of social tranquility.” he tweeted.
